Picture this: You’re about to get dressed but you catch a glimpse of a nightmare in the mirror: a splotchy, streaky tan. Don’t panic! We’ve been there before and we’re here to teach you how to exfoliate so you can achieve an even bronze. That’s why we created our Resurfacing Body Gel Scrub as a part of our Bronzing & Buffing Set.
Common Self-Tan Issues and How a Body Scrub Solves Them
Let’s explore some common self-tan mishaps and how exfoliation can scrub them away (literally)
Streaks and Patchiness
Uneven application can ruin your hopes of a flawless faux glow. Exfoliating beforehand removes dead skin cells, leaving a smooth surface for the self-tanner to adhere to. This helps the product go on evenly, giving you a consistent and natural-looking tan without those dreaded streaks and patches.
Ashy Knees, Ankles and Elbows
Everyone knows the frustration of ashy knees, ankles and elbows. But did you know that these dry areas tend to absorb more self-tanner? This is why they often become hot spots for unnatural dark patches. By thoroughly exfoliating these areas, you’ll remove the buildup of dead skin that causes excessive absorption.
Stained Palms
A good fake tan is a subtle one and orange-stained palms are a dead giveaway. Gently exfoliating your hands before applying helps to remove any lingering residue that can cause staining. It also smooths your palms, making it easier to wash off any leftover product.
Uneven Tan Fade
Although your fake tan might look polished at first, it can fade unevenly over time without a proper maintenance routine. Lightly exfoliating once or twice a week will help your tan fade evenly throughout its entire lifecycle. By the time you’re ready to self-tan again, you’ll have a smooth surface to work with!
How to Exfoliate With a Body Scrub in Your Self-Tan Routine
An exfoliating body scrub is an essential part of your self-tan routine, but when should you use it? And how? Follow these steps to incorporate it into your overall routine.
1. Cleanse Your Skin
First, hop in the shower and wash your body with a gentle shower gel. This step removes dirt and oil from your skin that might impede your self-tanner or other products. Besides, squeaky clean skin has got to be one of the best feelings in the world!
2. Exfoliate With a Body Scrub
Next up, the product we’ve all been waiting for: body scrub! After rinsing your body with water, apply the scrub to damp skin. Gently massage the scrub in circular motions to create a rich lather, paying extra attention to dry areas like elbows and knees. Finally, rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat your skin dry with a towel.
For best results, we recommend doing this step once or twice a week, leaving 24 hours before self-tanning to allow your skin to settle. After you’ve applied your self-tan, wait 3-4 days and exfoliate again. We know it sounds counterproductive, but trust us — your evenly fading tan will thank us later!
3. Remove Hair
Shaving or waxing unwanted hair before you self-tan but after you exfoliate is key. This will provide a silky-smooth canvas, reduce the chance of irritation and prevent the colour from soaking into open pores and leaving those annoying little dot marks. Shaving is fine, but if you prefer waxing and it suits your skin and lifestyle, it can be an even better option.
4. Apply Bali Bronzing Foam
Now it’s time to get sunny, honey! Apply our Bali Bronzing Foam to dry skin that’s free from moisturizer. Allow it to develop for a minimum of 2 hours or overnight for a deeper tan. Then, shower in warm water to remove the guide color and pat your skin dry. Repeat this step every 5-7 days or as needed. Moisturize daily with Body Moisture Whip to maintain the best bronze.
